When I'm down I hit Youtube for my friend's kids - absolutely killer bluegrass musicians at ages 14, 11, and 9. With kids like this, there's hope for the world.

And if you like that, try this one with over a million hits:

I love both Skype and Instant Messanger :) I used Skype all the time to talk to my parents when they lived in South Africa. Instant messanger is nice though because you can just quickly type some messages even if you don't want to use your web cam. I use this all the time to check in on my siblings. I can talk to my brother at work on this easily. I love to turn on the web cam to show recent purchases, etc to my sister. It makes it so fun.

So I guess if you are going to have long conversations then Skype is better. But if you just need to send a short message or ask a quick question, then Instant Messager is a good option.

[I recommend commonsensemedia.org]. This website gives ratings on movies, TV shows, games, music, web sites and books. Their ratings are highly detailed as they are broken into different categories that each receive their own rating and contain a short, but thorough description of why that category received that rating. The categories are as follows: Sex, Language, Violence (including scariness) and Message which includes information on social behavior, commercialism and drugs/alcohol/tobacco use. For games and web sites there is also information on educational value. You can also search for things by age group. It's a very cool web site.

Wow, LM. You're showing me tons of sites I need to take a look at. I'm so used to just reading the local paper and some of the LDS blogs. I can see I need to branch out.

RottenTomatoes is one of my regulars, though. Watching for movies where there's a positive consensus among reviewers has seldom steered me wrong.

I *LOVED* this site as well and lost well over 20 lbs using it. I love the little green status bar that lets you know how many more calories you have left.

It's tough to UN-install, but I really loved it while using it! AND it's free! I found it when looking for a free weight watcher's alternative and found that it was fantastic!

Babelfish has been a big help to me, too. Earlier this year, when my daughter and I traveled to Spain and Morocco, I was amazed at how few hostels in Madrid were able to correspond in English. (I thought perhaps they were just being obstinate - but once we got there, I found that the staff really couldn't communicate in basic English. I would have thought that a business that caters to international travellers would have required some English ability...oh, well). The responses I got seemed to fit my questions - or at least, Bebelfish's translations of them did....

I also made use of Babelfish's French translation in corresponding with Moroccan hotels, though most of them were able to handle basic English reasonably well.

Before entrusting my travel plans to a translation engine, I did run some tests using German (in whcih I am relatively fluent). Once I was satisfied that the results were acceptable, I went ahead and entrusted it with my Spanish and French correspondence.

I heard a program on NPR recently in which the reporter was challenged to carry all her trash with her for a week. Anything pegged for recycling was not considered "trash".

While I didn't actually carry my trash, I started shredding all the junk mail and putting it out with the newspapers, and carefully putting everything that wasn't organic or paper into the metal/plastic "curbie". at the end of the week I had so little actual trash that I didn't even bother to place it at the curb -- I hung on to it for another week, and would have, in fact gone for three if there hadn't been some rotting soy beans in there that were the result of trying to sprout some soy beans that weren't designed for sprouting.

However I have a mega-sprouter (cost about $100) which pumps water over the seeds at frequent intervals. ^ days in there for mung beans, and they are just like the commercial ones.

I have a small garden plot, although this year I only have three tomato plants and nothing else in it at the moment. However I did harvest some Japanese Red Maple seeds and some green maple seeds, and I have a dozen seedlings started. Never tried it before, but they appear to be thriving. I shall transplant them into peat pots when they are about 2" tall.

I reduced my winter thermostat setting from 72 to 68 (day) and 60 (night), and saved over $400 on my gas consumption for the year. The summer thermostat is set to 80 (day) and 88 (night).

I have picked up a trick from the UPS trucks -- when I am in line at the ATM, or in other settings where I would normally allow my car to idle, I turn it off. The pennies saved on gasoline add up. Also I consciously calculate the actual gasoline cost of trips to Charlotte to shop and so forth. Miles from the odometer, avg about 20 MPG (it's a Dodge Grande Caravan), and ever rising cost per gallon.

Spending $12 to go shopping at the Earth Fare Organics grocery, I better have a shopping list, and come back with a bunch of groceries. Otherwise shop locally.

I heard a program on NPR recently in which the reporter was challenged to carry all her trash with her for a week. Anything pegged for recycling was not considered “trash”.

While I didn’t actually carry my trash, I started shredding all the junk mail and putting it out with the newspapers, and carefully putting everything that wasn’t organic or paper into the metal/plastic “curbie”. at the end of the week I had so little actual trash that I didn’t even bother to place it at the curb — I hung on to it for another week, and would have, in fact gone for three if there hadn’t been some rotting soy beans in there that were the result of trying to sprout some soy beans that weren’t designed for sprouting.

I shall transplant them into peat pots when they are about 2″ tall.

Snopes usually nails it but I've also found that when I cite Snopes to those who send these silly things, they actually get offended. They WANT to believe these stories that support their cherished beliefs. It seems that attacking the story is tantamount to attacking the belief.

The good news is that I don't get any more of these silly stories. The bad news is that I often don't get any more email from the sender at all.
